“A work should be born “from the void for the void” rather than “from a project for a target”. The structures that offer art, such as galleries, museums, publishing houses, including the people who work there, should focus on providing their structures free from any attribute that may influence the work itself. Not only does the compartmentalization dehumanize the work and the artist, but it also damages their contents. Outside the compartmentalization, the same content would have much more meaning. In art, individual experience is essential. In a world of social media machines this autonomous experience is increasingly difficult. […] The void is the artist’s friend. Usually the work that arises from the void represents something new for the artist. If nothing else, it makes him grow both in his work and as a conscious being. In any case, all the works must be thought from the beginning. Maybe you can be influenced by the past and start from there to look for a new perspective, or start from scratch and in doing so realize how the work finds its own form by itself. It is as if the artist took a step into the void and realizes that it supports him.”.
Cracking is a picture book that gathers together Tommi Musturi’s work from 2013 up today. The book holds plain art, illustrations for magazines and records, sketchbook material, pixel art and more. In all it’s a mash-up of different styles and perspectives, rich in form and colour. The book as well contains an article by the author (on working on the borders of different arts) and liner notes on all the material included. Cracking takes a look in art beyond the artist himself.
Tommi Musturi
Tommi Musturi lives in Tampere. He is the editor of the quarterly magazine Kuti and of the annual anthology Glomp, winner of the alternative comic prize at the Angoulême festival in 2005. He has published a lot of comics and books not just in his country, but also in Portugal, Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden and North America. In 2012, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Comics festival, he was given a major retrospective in Lucerne and, in the same year, he took part in the collective Eye Balling, in the Kiasma museum in Helsinki. He continually experiments with new styles in different artistic genres and he is constantly reinventing himself, occupying a prominent place in the aesthetics of an entire generation of Finnish authors.
Cosmografie (Fortepressa, 2018) is the first book that he has published in Italy.

“Un’opera dovrebbe nascere “dal vuoto per il vuoto” anziché “da un progetto per un target”. Le strutture che propongono arte, come le gallerie, i musei, le case editrici, comprese le persone che vi lavorano, dovrebbero concentrarsi sul fornire le loro strutture libere da qualsiasi attributo che possa influenzare l’opera stessa. Non solo la compartimentazione disumanizza l’opera e l’artista, ma ne danneggia anche i contenuti. Al di fuori della compartimentazione uno stesso contenuto avrebbe molto più significato. Nell’arte l’esperienza individuale è essenziale. In un mondo di macchine da social media questa esperienza autonoma è sempre più difficile. […] Il vuoto è amico dell’artista. Di solito l’opera che nasce dal vuoto rappresenta qualcosa di nuovo per l’artista. Se non altro, lo fa crescere sia nel suo lavoro, sia come essere cosciente. In ogni caso, tutte le opere vanno pensate dal principio. Magari è possibile farsi influenzare dal passato e partire da lì per cercare una nuova prospettiva, oppure cominciare da zero e così facendo accorgersi di come l’opera trovi da sé la propria forma. È come se l’artista facesse un passo nel vuoto e si accorgesse che esso lo sostiene”.
Cracking raccoglie il lavoro visionario di Tommi Musturi dal 2013 ad oggi. Il libro contiene immagini di arte visiva, illustrazioni per riviste e dischi, schizzi, pixel art e altro ancora. Nel suo insieme è un mix di stili e prospettive diversi, ricco di forme e colori. Il volume include anche un articolo del suo autore dedicato al lavoro ai confini delle diverse arti, e note di copertina a corredo di tutto il materiale presentato. Cracking getta uno sguardo nell’arte che va oltre l’artista stesso.
Tommi Musturi
Tommi Musturi vive a Tampere. E’ editor della rivista trimestrale Kuti e dell’antologia annuale Glomp, vincitrice del Premio del fumetto alternativo al festival di Angoulême nel 2005. Ha pubblicato oltre che nel suo paese, anche in Portogallo, Germania, Francia, Belgio, Svezia e Nord America. Nel 2012 in occasione dei 20 anni del festival Fumetto gli viene dedicata una grande retrospettiva a Lucerna e, nello stesso anno, partecipa alla collettiva Eye Balling, le nuove forme del fumetto al museo Kiasma di Helsinki. Sperimenta continuamente nuovi stili in diversi generi artistici e reinventando costantemente se stesso, occupa un posto di rilievo nell’estetica di un’intera generazione di disegnatori finlandesi.
Cosmografie (Fortepressa, 2018) è il primo libro che ha pubblicato in Italia.
